2nd Annual Beard, Braids, and Mustache Contest at the Alaska Scottish Highland Games

It's back! The Alaskan Scottish Beard, Braids, and Mustache Contest at the ASHG is set to take place on Sunday, June 29, 2025, 2pm on the Culloden Memorial Stage. This exciting new event promises to be a highlight of the games, celebrating the artistry and creativity of participants as they sculpt and style their facial hair and braids in homage to the rugged spirit of the Scottish Highlands.

Contest Categories

Beard Categories

1. Highland Warrior Beard: Participants sculpt their beards to evoke the ruggedness and strength of Highland warriors, incorporating elements like braids, beads, and rugged textures.

2. Best Ginger Beard: Flaunt your ginger hair proudly. Whether styled or natural, this category celebrates the beauty of ginger beards.

3. Historical Figure Beard: Participants pay homage to iconic figures from Scottish history, such as William Wallace, Robert Burns, or Bonnie Prince Charlie, by styling their beards to resemble these historical figures.

4. Best Freestyle Beard: Get creative with your beard using waxes, hairspray, and other styling products. Create intricate designs, perhaps even a thistle, and let your imagination run wild.

5. Best Fake Beard: For those who can't grow a beard but are handy with creativity, this category is for you. Construct a beard using any materials you can think of—wool, head hair, LEGO, playing cards, and more. Incorporate colors and patterns inspired by traditional Scottish tartans, Highland cattle, or even mythical creatures like the Loch Ness Monster.

Braids Categories

1. Highland Warrior Braids: Participants sculpt their hair into fierce and bold braided styles reminiscent of Highland warriors, incorporating elements like braided crowns, warrior braids, and rugged textures.

2. Best Ginger Braids: Celebrate your ginger locks with any braided style, be it natural or creatively styled.

3. Historical Figure Braids: Participants honor Scottish historical figures like Mary Queen of Scots, Queen Scathach of Skye, or Flora MacDonald by styling their hair into braided hairstyles inspired by these icons.

4. Best Freestyle Braid: Showcase your creativity with braided hairstyles, using products to achieve intricate designs like a Celtic knot.

Mustache Categories

1. Highland Warrior Mustache: Contestants sculpt their mustaches into bold, rugged styles that evoke the spirit of Highland warriors, incorporating elements like twists, curls, and a strong, commanding presence.

2. Best Ginger Mustache: Show off your ginger mustache in any style you choose. From natural to creatively styled, anything goes.

3. Loch Ness Curl Mustache: This whimsical category features exaggerated curls at the ends of the mustache, resembling the waves of Scotland's famous Loch Ness. Experiment with different curl shapes and sizes for a playful look.

4. Best Freestyle Mustache: Unleash your creativity with your mustache, using waxes, hairspray, and other styling tools to create unique and imaginative designs.

Registration and Participation

Pre-registration for the contest is not required, but those who pre-register will receive a 2-Day admission ticket to the games. This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase your creativity and Scottish pride, whether you’re a competitor or a spectator.

ALASKA SCOTTISH HIGHLAND GAMES WAIVER:
The undersigned, desiring to participate in the Alaskan Scottish Highland Games being sponsored by the Alaskan Scottish Club, Inc., including its members and affiliated groups, and recognizing that the Alaskan Scottish Club, Inc. is not in a position to be responsible for injuries or damages, hereby agrees to fully and completely release and waive the Alaskan Scottish Club, Inc., all of its members and affiliated groups, from all claims, rights, or causes of action of any nature which might acquire by virtue of injury to self or others or damages to property of self or others arising out of participation in said Scottish Games; and further hereby agrees to defend, indemnify and hold the Alaskan Scottish Club, Inc., all of its members and affiliated groups, harmless from all liability, claims, damages and costs arising in any way out of participation in said Games. I also understand and agree that the Alaskan Scottish Club may use for publicity of the Alaskan Scottish Highland Games photographs and video images of the entrant’s participation in this event without obligation or liability to the entrant.
PHOTO RELEASE:
The undersigned hereby gives consent to the Alaska Scottish Club to take photographs, audio recordings, and/or video graphs of myself and/or my organization during the Highland Games and to use such photographs, audio recordings, and/or video graphs for such promotion, publicity of other lawful purposes as the Alaska Scottish Club deems appropriate.
